From Ashes to Purpose: My Journey to Becoming a Divorce Doula

Becoming the Divorce Doula, I won't back down
I won't back down.

As Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" plays softly in the background, I can't help but reflect on the winding path that led me to my true calling. They say the third time's a charm, and in my case, it couldn't be more true. After starting and stopping this business twice since 2021, I'm finally embracing my role as a Divorce Doula with unwavering clarity and conviction.

Walking Through the Fire: My Personal Divorce Journey

My journey began during the peak of the pandemic. Trapped at home, wiping down groceries, I grappled with the raw emotions of a fresh divorce. The first holidays without my children felt like punishment, not freedom. An overwhelming sense of defeat, devastation, and intense loneliness hijacked my mental health.

It was in this dark time that the concept of a Divorce Doula was born. As I searched for meaning, purpose, and community, I realized what I truly needed was someone who had walked the walk and could intelligently talk the talk. Someone to help me make sense of the chaos and remind me that divorce is a marathon, not a sprint.

Lessons Learned in the Trenches

Through my own experience, I learned invaluable lessons that I now share with my clients:

  1. Communication is key. Say what you mean without being mean. There's power in non-violent communication (NVC).

  2. Well-meaning advice can sometimes do more harm than good. Don't believe everything you hear.

  3. There's no blueprint for navigating divorce – it's uncharted territory.

  4. Self-care and mindfulness are crucial for survival, transformation, and growth.

Lighting the Way for Others

Having walked through the fiery darkness myself, I'm now equipped to guide others towards the light. As a Divorce Doula, I offer:

  1. Support: A neutral presence to help make sense of overwhelming thoughts and feelings.

  2. Coaching: Practical tools and techniques for dealing with legal, financial, and emotional challenges.

  3. Mindfulness practices: Including meditation, journaling, and breathwork to manage stress, anxiety, and depression.

Healing to Help Others Heal

My journey through divorce taught me that we can't effectively guide others until we've done our own inner work. By facing my fears, processing my emotions, and embracing personal growth, I've become better equipped to support my clients through their own evolution.

This healing process has involved talk therapy, meditation, self-reflection, and a deep dive into understanding the complexities of divorce. It's allowed me to approach my work with empathy, wisdom, compassion, and a genuine desire to see others thrive. Together, we move from victimhood to mastery.

A Soul's Purpose Realized

As I stand here today, I'm filled with a sense of purpose that I've never experienced before. My background as a yoga teacher since '96, a licensed massage therapist, certified meditation instructor, and lifelong entrepreneur has all led me to this moment. I truly believe that supporting individuals through their divorce process is my soul's calling.

Just as it takes a village to plan a wedding, raise children, or navigate the dying process, I believe it takes a village to get through a divorce. I'm honored to be a part of that village for those who need it most.

To anyone out there struggling with divorce, remember this: there are no problems without solutions. Everything is workable, and with the right support, you can emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

As your Divorce Doula, I'm here to help you connect the dots, see the forest through the trees, and navigate the sometimes shark-infested waters of divorce. Together, we'll turn this challenging chapter of your life into an opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and ultimately, a brighter future.
